Farming
There are a large number of farms in the UK that produce all kinds of food for sale across the country. As well as food, some farms can also produce and manage fibres and fuel, but largely they are best known for producing items that can be purchased and then eaten. Food can come from a variety of sources, through grain growing in a field to livestock such as cattle which is bred and nurtured on a farm. Farming is an important part of any society, without which there simply would not be any food. Their development and history establishes them as a major part of the ways in which towns flourished in early settlements. Before farms, the hunter/gatherer approach was used and there was less need for the likes of roads and marketing.
Linked to farming is the idea of agriculture, which also refers to food production, though it can also encompass ideals to do with forestry. As well as dealing with food, fibre and fuel, agriculture also involves the production and management of raw materials and pharmaceuticals.
